I have come across some mold in my home and talked to numerous companies about what to do. I got a few different stories while doing my research. It seems that the standard is to first get testing and a thorough inspection. I found a lot of good information at:
Indoor Environmental Association
www.indoorea.com
They have a lot of good links to free info. Another good company that helped me out with testing was:
www.envirosvs.com
My problem turned out to be a leaky pipe in a wall and was not a huge ordeal. Although my neighbor did not have such luck when his crawl space flooded and had standing water for 6 months. His turned into quite a project.

thanks for all the great information.

I am so glad that people are putting out the word on mold. I am presently trying to get my house tested for this, we recently purchased this home and almost instantly my body reacted to some sort of smell. Although my nose is very good at picking up the smell of mold this time the smell was disguised. Possibly due to the fact that the previous owners had fragrance smells going on throughout the house before it was sold. Now that we have the home, my son and I have noticed irriation in our throat, I have felt burning/extreme dryness in my skin, lips and nose. The throat irriation is the worst. I am looking for a remediation company now as I am affraid our conditions may get worse. I am so thankful that there are people getting the word out, I and hope that our laws will change dramatically when it comes to homeowners selling a home with these existing problems.
